Nothing turns a punch bowl into a showpiece faster than a rolling cloud of fog. Dry ice is the secret behind those bubbling cauldrons and smoking cocktails, and it’s easier to use than you’d think. You just need to know a few ground rules before you start dropping it into glasses.
What Dry Ice Actually Is
Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide. It sits at about -109°F, and instead of melting into a puddle, it turns straight into gas. That gas is the fog. When you drop dry ice into a liquid, it bubbles, smokes, and gives your drink a slight fizz, all without watering it down.
The Safety Rules
- Never touch it with bare hands. Use tongs, an ice scoop, or insulated gloves. Dry ice causes frostbite-style burns in seconds.
- Never swallow it. This is the big one. Don’t drink anything with a piece of dry ice still in it. Wait until the bubbling and smoking stops completely, which means the ice is fully gone.
- Use bigger pieces, not tiny ones, in individual glasses. Larger pieces sink to the bottom and stay put. Small ones can float and end up in someone’s mouth.
- Don’t seal it up. Never store dry ice in an airtight container like a sealed jar or bottle. The gas builds pressure and can burst the container.
- Keep the room ventilated. Carbon dioxide displaces oxygen, so avoid using large amounts in small, closed spaces or cars with the windows up.
- Keep it away from kids and pets. Set the punch bowl somewhere supervised and serve kids from a fog-free pitcher.
Two Ways to Fog Up Your Drinks
In the glass: Build your drink, then use tongs to add one large pellet of dry ice. Let the smoke roll, and remind guests to wait until the bubbling stops before sipping.
Around the bowl: Want the drama without any dry ice in the actual drinks? Place your punch bowl inside a larger bowl or cauldron, add a little warm water to the outer bowl, and drop the dry ice in there. Fog spills over the sides, and your punch never touches the ice. This is the go-to method for parties with kids.
How to Store It Until Party Time
Dry ice disappears fast, so pick it up as close to your event as you can. Keep it in a regular cooler with the lid resting on top (not latched airtight), and store the cooler in a cool, ventilated spot like a garage. Skip the freezer, since the extreme cold can mess with the thermostat.
